Last year I spent most of my time with my nose in stuck in a book. Not your regular fun scifi book but nutrition books, pregnancy books and childbirth books. Before I got pregnant and during the pregnancy, I had many many questions. As an ethical vegan, I wasn’t going to drink milk and eat eggs, but I had to know this was safe for my baby and healthy for me.
Most mainstream pregnancy books contain the advice that veganism is too difficult to get right, but I knew there must be better books out there, and there are. Soon, I will write a post with more of the details of how I stayed healthy and grew my big bouncing 8 1/2 lb baby, but for now I present for your perusal the books I found most helpful in planning a healthy vegan pregnancy…..
Feeding your vegan infant – with confidence by Sandra Hood, The Vegan Society’s Consultant Dietician
A great little book, contains almost all the info you need while pregnant. Also contains lots of info on raising your babies and young children, as the name implies! My dietician was impressed because it’s written by a dietician!
You can get this book from The UK Vegan Society, Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com Marketplace
Vegetarian and Vegan Mother and Baby Guide by Rose Elliot
This is more like a large pamphlet than a book and has some good information in it, also has good weaning information and parent stories. Published by Viva UK.
Pregnancy, Children & the Vegan Diet by Dr. Michael Klaper
Good for basic nutrition info. This is out of print, and very 70’s but it’s worth chasing up on Amazon Marketplace. Ignore all the stuff about the Phoenix clan being the pinnacles of health too! A lot of the breastfeeding info is similarly dated.
As we’re now introducing solids and continuing to breastfeed, I’ve been reading more books, but that’s another post for another day

Completely forgot about this one… the old tried & trusted “Dr. Spock’s Baby and Childcare-8th edition” advocates a vegan diet for babies & children.
