Day 13 : Today we challenge you to reduce your junk mail…
We’re not too bad here, we don’t get much addressed junk mail, any we do, I just tape back up the envelope, write “Return to Sender – Unsolicited Junk Mail – remove from list”, pop it in the post and hope they get charged the return postage!
Phone junk is the same, we’re ex-directory, so if we ever do get unsolicited calls, the caller ends up on the receiving end of 20 questions, “How did you get this number” and so on, finishing with “take me off your list!”.
I must get a nice sticker for my letterbox though, we get a lot of flyers and junk every week, that just adds to your recycling costs, although we did get a flyer for a lovely takeaway the last day…
In Ireland, be careful when moving house, if you ask An Post to redirect your mail, read the form carefully and opt-out of the marketing rubbish at the end or else you’re giving them the right to sell on your address. Similarily when updating your electoral information, make sure you’re not on the version of the electoral role available to companies for advertising purposes.
Your phone company should be able to add your preference not to receive cold-calls to the National Directory Database, click here for more info. The Data Protection Commissioner has information on the different opt-out options available in Ireland. Interestingly…
…mail addressed to “the occupant”, “the resident” or “the householder” does not necessarily involve the use of personal data and consequently data protection legislation does not apply
If you’re in the UK, have a look at Ecostreet’s guide to putting yourself on a no-junk mail register.
Only one day left of the Go Green Challenge…
