Day 14 : There’s a choice of three tasks today, do one or do all three:
1) Start composting
We don’t compost at home as the council have composting facilities as part of our fortnightly rubbish collection. All food scraps, garden clippings, leaves, tissues and even compostable nappies can go into your brown bin, wrapped in newspaper, then away they go to get composted in a large-scale facility.
In the long term, I’d like to get a wormery composter for our back garden, because then we’d actually have some free compost to use!
2) Replace disposable batteries with rechargeable batteries
This is something I must start doing again. A few years ago, all my batteries were rechargeable but I have no idea why we’re now using disposables. We even had a solar-powered recharger when we were camping in Australia, pretty cool!
3) Plant a tree… or a pot plant
Our house has an established garden, it’s very lush and lovely, and it’s basically full! There are some lovely trees in it, and lots of ivy and creepers. Indoors I have a spider plant, it’s quite old, we’ve had it at least 5 years, maybe longer!
To quote Homer Simpson…

Spider plant, spider plant
Does whatever a spider plant does
Can it swing from a web
No it can’t, it’s a plant
Looook oouttt, it is a spider plant!
So there you go, the 14-Day Go Green Challenge has come to an end, Ecostreet are running a competition for the best story about how you got on with the challenge.
Sadly, the prize is a leather MP3 case, carbon-neutral or not, leather is still leather so I won’t be entering… But it was a fun challenge, I enjoyed getting a new task to think about each day. Hopefully some of you enjoyed playing along…

Very interesting reading. I’m the Director of a company that manufactures Wormeries, so it’s good that you’ve thought about them. They certainly do yield the highest possible quality compost – perfect for potting etc…!
I’m not too happy with our fortnightly collections here as it means the brown bin is full of waste that is upto 2 weeks old. And the bins are far from sealed – so as much as I try to keep them cool – the sun shines and the smell can get very bad! No good, if you ask me!
Interesting that your local council will take the compostable nappies. Several won’t. But I do wonder where it all ends up and what happens to it.
Give me a shout if you want to have a play with a Wormery!
thanks Liam, I know what you mean about the brown bins, the smell doesn’t escape from ours but on a hot day the bin sweats on the inside, it’s certainly not the most pleasant thing you’ll ever encounter!
Thanks for sharing the challenge. Too bad about the reward. It’s like they’re throwing all the hard work away. Oh well. Little by little, I suppose.
“Plant a tree…or a pot plant”
A “Pot Plant”???
Really?
Over here we call them “potted plants”… as a “pot plant” would be something else entirely…
tee hee jporchanian.. never thought of it that way
I loved reading this series. It was quite nice awaiting for the new challenge every day.
it was fun getting a new thing to think about each day, i have no challenge today, i must find a new one…
