Not the bodily fluids of a small mammal (as its name may imply), Pocari Sweat is an isotonic drink from Asia. It’s saved our sanity more times than I can remember…
First time we had it was in Tokyo, from an icy-cool vending machine, while I wiped the sweat from my face with my little towel, everyone there carries a little towel on the underground for this purpose.
We kept 2 litre bottles of it in our little hostel room to rehydrate during the melting hot nights.
Years pass, and in Thailand we meet it again… lovely Pocari Sweat saves us from the humidity as we travel!
Sadly missing from Malaysia, we were reunited in Singapore for a brief time and then gone….
Until we found it in Wellington, New Zealand in A-Mart (beside New World near the YHA in case anyone needs some)!
Nothing in the world surpasses its magical superheroic rejuvenation powers; it can obliterate a hangover with a single sup, it fills you with rehydration as you hold the cool can, it confuses you with its name… However Wikipedia has this to say on the matter:
The first part of the name, Pocari, means “like a cloud floating in the sky” or “a situation in which a cloud is floating in the sky” in Japanese, and has a connotation of lightness, buoyancy, and ease.
“Sweat” was apparently intended to suggest diligence and its fruits – the idea intending to connote to the user that Pocari Sweat works to make one feel fresh and relaxed.
As we made our way home to Ireland, we thought we were leaving it behind, but there it was.. high above the city…. in Hong Kong… our lovely friend, Pocari Sweat!

I’ve been out gardening, it is very very hot today, I want need some Pocari Sweat, but alas there is none…
Disclaimer: Pocari Sweat should only be drunk freezing cold, otherwise it tastes absolutely brutal!

So what’s in it that makes it so good?
pocaris
Now the question is: are pocaris vegan fare?
I’m quite intrigued. Will be on the lookout in chinatown next time …
