Happy birthday to me,
Happy birthday to me,
My daughter is si-ick,
And so is my hubbie…..
As they say, the best laid plans! I have set aside the plans for pancakes and chocolate cake, followed by a trip to town with Mr Halfpintpixie for lunch and a glass of wine in the little Asian place that we can’t go to with littlepixie as it’s too small, while my Mum babysits littlepixie. Why have I set my amazing plans aside?
Littlepixie came down with a little vomiting bug yesterday, poor mite. She couldn’t keep any solid food down, and was even throwing up her breastfeeds! The GP’s nurse recommended stopping all breastfeeds and just giving her water and diorolyte (a rehydration powder, vile, vile stuff).
I didn’t like the idea of that, she was sick and needed her comfort feeds. Trying to withhold boobies to a sick littlepixie would be too mean. Luckily my friends at magicmum.com gave their experiences and all agreed that breastmilk would be the best for her. The advice to stop milk feeding is really aimed at formula or cow-milk fed children. Extended breastfeeding is fairly uncommon here so it’s hard to get relevant information.
So I spent yesterday doing laundry. All my clothes are now sparking clean, so are most of littlepixie’s and so are the towels that I covered our bed with! But she seems to be a good bit better, touch wood!
Mr. Halfpintpixie is sick with a cold, so I’m letting him off the cake making, but he has promised to bake me my birthday cake at the weekend, yum!
He got me some great presents, two of which may interest the vegan folks amongst all you lovely readers …
Terra Nostra Organic Rice Milk Chocolate Bar from veganessentials.com
Four of the original flavour and four of the almond flavour. They are so like milk chocolate, they’re gorgeous! I’m not sure how long they’ll last
Amazingly fast shipping from the veganessentials people too!
(You may remember I ordered these before Christmas from the UK vegan store, but they shipped me ordinary dark chocolate without notifying me beforehand, when I emailed to query it, I got quite a snotty email back essentially telling me “tough luck, we don’t stock the milk choc ones”. They still have these milk chocolate bars on their site even though they don’t stock them! Last time we’ll be ordering from them I tell you. Mr. HPP ate and enjoyed the dark chocs, but that is beside the point.)
Alternative Vegan by Dino Sarma
You’ll be familiar with Dino if you listen to the Vegan Freak Radio podcasts. On the Vegan Freak forums, people have been raving about his book, so it got added to my Amazon wishlist and now it’s here, joining in the cookbook army which waits patiently in our kitchen. It’s filled with South Asian dishes without loads of meat substitutes, which is exactly what I’ve been looking for, I’m not a huge fan of meat substitutes at all. I’ve had a flick through it and I forsee many gold stars!
I’m currently having my elevenses and scoffing some of my new chocolate, while Mr Halfpintpixie takes littlepixie for a nap in her buggy. He took a day off work to give me a day off work! Life is good. The start of a new year and even though my plans for today fell by the wayside, I’m happy

Happy Birthday! I hope everyone feels better soon so you can have a little celebration!
How little half-pint today?
she’s much better, thanks for asking jen, she was up half the night mostly because I was afraid to let her nurse to sleep as I did and she brought it all up. But at 2:00 am I got brave & fed her to sleep and she slept well, seems to be way better today, hope it’s all gone!
Happy Birthday!!! Sorry everyone is sick though. Looks like I’ll be sick on my birthday too…but mine is a good sick
Happy birthday! Glad to hear your home is feeling better.
I have yet to pick up Vegan Alternative. I keep waiting to get it for a gift. I think I just need to bite the bullet and buy it myself.
We eat too many meat substitutes here in the Piggy household. I can’t wait to get my hands on that book and cook some meat-sub-free meals.
Hi there! I found your blog through the bloggy giveaway and really appreciate the comment you left on my blog regarding my twins. Happy Birthday to you, and I am so sorry to hear that you have a sick household. I wanted to give you a link from kellymom.com regarding breastfeeding a sick child. I found this link immensely helpful and hope you will as well…

If you scroll down about halway there is a section that specifically discussing vomiting and diarrhea (aka stomach bugs). It pretty much affirms everything you were feeling an what your friends said, but I thought it might be nice to be able to quote a source. Again, happy birthday wishes to you and I hope your family is feeling better in a snap.
happy birthday! so sorry to hear hubby and littlepixie are under the weather. i hope you get to enjoy your birthday plans soon.
good for you for getting better info than what that nurse had to offer! my head would have spun around in circles had someone suggested that to me. i’m certainly fortunate that i have moderately progressive doctors for myself and the nugget, but every for every visit i go armed with my own research. you are always you (and your child’s) best advocate. and kudos to you for being just that!
thanks everyone
Just back from a decaf soy cappuchino break while littlepixie took her afternoon nap, yum!
Meleah, I spend half my online life advising people to read kellymom but never even thought of it yesterday! I’m such a nappy-brain, it’s such a helpful page, thanks for the link!
Happy Happy birthday, HPP!!! I hope everyone is well very soon…
Happy birthday! I also hope everyone gets better. I do hope you got to enjoy your vegan yummies. I’m having lots of cravings and this post isn’t helping.
Happiest of days to you! I am still nursing my DS thru the flu, so I can totally relate. Good on ‘ya for giving LP the Mama luv she needs through her sickies, and for keeping your own spirits up on this special, tho’ not what you expected, day!
Happy Birthday!
Here in Australia they advised me to keep breastfeeding Lily when she was vomiting. Apparently they absorb breastmilk extremely quickly and even if they vomit within minutes they still get a lot of benefit from it.
I hope that your household is all better soon.
happy birthday!!

sorry to hear the fam was sick, but am glad LP is doing better now. and goodness, i’m glad you trusted your instincts and kept bfing her through this illness. mama’s milk is definitely best.
hugs.
amy
Happy Birthday!!! You share a birthday with my oldest (I’m guessing you are a little older than 8 though). Sorry to hear little pixie is sick and I’m sure she’ll be better soon thanks to mama’s milk. My boys came down with chicken pox for P’s birthday. I really like the Alternative Vegan cookbook. We’ve made several things from it and all of them good.
