I was wandering around the web and decided to look at Erdinger’s website.
I drink their non-alcoholic beer regularly, it’s lovely with dinner, especially bean burgers & chips and being a German beer it is wheaty enough to still taste good without alcohol!
Especially now that summer is on the way, cold beer is a must in the HPP fridge. Being good co-sleepers, we only have the alcohol free stuff at home. Anyway, their website is funny, they tout Erdinger non-alcoholic as a sort of wonder drink. They say:
Erdinger Non-Alcoholic is tri-active wheat beer enjoyment: isotonic, vitamin-rich and calorie-reduced
What on earth does “tri-active wheat beer enjoyment” mean? That’s not all though, it is also…
Isotonic:
It is therefore the ideal regeneration drink after sports activities and is a mineral-rich or electrolyte beverage suitable for a balanced sports diet. In contrast to other isotonic sports drinks Erdinger Non-Alcoholic is also free of chemical additives.
Full of minerals:
is rich in potassium, magnesium and phosphorus – it can therefore be described as a mineral-rich or electrolyte beverage.
contains, for example iodine and iron
And vitamins:
contains almost all vitamins of the B-group, especially thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folic acid (B9) and cobalamin (B12). The amount of folic acid contained in Erdinger Non-Alcoholic (50 µg per 500 ml) corresponds to 25 % of the recommended daily dosage, that of cobalamin (0.20 µg per 500 ml) 20 %, according to the German Nutrition Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung).
And this gem in the FAQ:
Should women drink non-alcoholic beer while pregnant or breast-feeding?
An alcohol content of 0.4 % vol has no effect on the body and is regarded as completely harmless. Fruit juices often contain the same level of alcohol. Erdinger Non-Alcoholic can even be a valuable dietary component for pregnant women – it has few calories and is very low on sodium, but at the same time is rich in potassium, fat- and cholesterol-free and contains no chemical additives. Non-alcoholic beer can promote the formation of prolactin, a hormone of the pituitary gland that stimulates the production of milk during the breast-feeding period. The bitter substances in non-alcoholic beer also have a soothing effect.
La Leche League says the same about this:
Beer, but not ethanol, has been reported in a number of studies to stimulate prolactin levels and breastmilk production (1, 2, 3). Thus it is presumed that the polysaccharide from barley may be the prolactin-stimulating component of beer (4). Non-alcoholic beer is equally effective.
Woo-hoo! So what are you waiting for? Pop that baby in your sling (a cradle carry would be handiest in case you need to breastfeed him while you’re out) and prop yourself up on a bar stool at your local pub for the day with your isotonic health breastfeeding tonic non-alcoholic beer. Off you go… have fun

Nice! I’m gonna have to pick up some O’Douls or .5 Heineken’s today while I’m out shopping! Baby could always use a little more milk!
This is also very funny Pixie. With all my anxiety around nursing these days, maybe I should grab a six pack of non-alcoholic beer.
Why didn’t I ever think of this
I didn’t take any alcohol since March 2006, a month before pregnancy until this past december. I had thought that I might be affected really bad and be drunk with a glass of beer after such a long time but it didn’t happen.I drank a beer in Istanbul once and it didn’t help to be a bit merry
I also looked for this at Sainsbury’s today. The non-alcoholic option wasn’t on shelves so S. bought the regular one and liked it very much
[...] Non-alcoholic bear of wonderfulness. [...]
you should try sr. paulies girl n/a its the best so far
I am so no thinking these days. I was told by another Mom to drink beer if I wanted to increase my milk. But I did not want to drink alcohol while breastfeeding. I never thought of non-alcoholic beer!!! This is great! Going to get some tonight!
