Oct 1st marks the start of National Breastfeeding Week 2008 here in Ireland.
It is also the launch date for a brand new mum-run breastfeeding support site called TheBreastWay.ie. This site has been set up by a breastfeeding mum & doctor who was appalled by the lack of breastfeeding support she received with her two babies.
TheBreastWay site aims to be a one stop shop for breastfeeding support in Ireland, offering a huge range of articles and support from both healthcare professionals and other mothers:
TheBreastWay provides:
- Comprehensive information regarding ALL aspects of breastfeeding (including the funny and not-so-funny “booby traps”!)
- Up to date, evidence based medical information and peer reviewed literature regarding breastfeeding
- Current breastfeeding news in the media, celebrity breastfeeding news and more
- Breastfeeding meetings, groups, contacts and help of all sorts
- Current medical information regarding all aspects of breastfeeding
- A chat forum and and “breastpal” advice facility for breastfeeding banter! This includes an instant messanging facility to contact one of our list of “breastpals” – experienced consultants or breastfeeders who are visible online to you and available for instant advice.
Doesn’t that sound fantastic? The mother who set it up has been as busy as a very busy bee getting it ready to go live today, and the site looks great.
I’m very proud to say that I got to help out a little, contributing to various articles including “breastfeeding a toddler“, “blocked ducts” and a future “vegan breastfeeding” article. You can also read more of my experiences in the “flat nipples” article.
So, let’s hope TheBreastWay goes from strength to strength, because women in Ireland have been lectured at by the HSE for years now about breastfeeding but when it comes down to it the HSE is not coming through for us, women are simply not getting the support they need in practice.
Hopefully this group of determined mummies & healthcare professionals will be able to fill in the gaps and help more women get the support they need! So, go on, pop over to The Breast Way and have a look around, get involved and give your support

Congratulations on being a part of such an awesome site! Wishing you, thebreastway and all mama’s in Ireland the very best!
Congratulations to you and all the Irish moms who are championing breastfeeding. Love your blog and the new site.
We are kindred spirits. I am big on prevention and I think that it is wonderful that the Irish are celebrating breastfeeding this month.
Although not a complete pass on the chances of getting breast cancer, I prefer to have some positive discussion of breastfeeding added to the events going on in the States during October.
