It’s raining, it’s pouring….

9 October, 2008 by halfpintpixie

Oh we are absolutely soaked, well we were, we’re dry now. Myself and Littlepixie went for a stroll up to the Farmer’s Market for our weekly organic veg shop. There was a light drizzle in the air so I popped LP into the buggy, covered her up and off we went. All grand. Did our shopping and started on the way home again, LP munching on some delicious spelt seedy bread, yum!

Anyway, remember I mentioned a few days ago that she is altering her naps, well she decided that it was too early for a nap, too constricting inside the buggy etc. and she convinced me to let her out. So she walked home beside me. All grand, except that the light drizzle had gotten a whole lot worse! So there we were, all our produce nice and snug in the buggy, covered with the raincover and us soaking wet, jumping in puddles. Thankfully, we were in our raingear and wellies (well LP was, I was bedecked in my vegan docs) before leaving the house.

Because, you know, I was thinking as I walked home, the village was jammed with mums & dads in cars collecting precious children who might get wet, and I remembered that when I was a wee girl we walked to and from school every day. Families didn’t have two cars then, if they even had one car chances are the dad had it at work, so kids walked home from school, if they got wet, they dried off.

So myself & LP got wet, and then we dried off. She’s napping now, and I am wolfing down a well-deserved cup of tea, a banana, and several slices of White Rustic Bread from the market. I don’t eat white bread normally, so this is a naughty treat on market day! How sad am I??

But, I have been thinking (very thoughtful today, I am!). It’s not going to get any drier over the next few months. We’re so close to the sea that we’ll have rain all winter, soooo I am going to google Organic Veg Box Schemes and see if there are any good ones in our area. One of our market stands does a box, so they might be a good starting point as I know their food is good! Because I don’t know if I want to get soaked every Thursday in the pursuit of my dinner.

On an aside, I got a new gadget. It’s a buggy brolly, an umbrella that clips onto your buggy, like a child’s sun umbrella, but for big people and for the rain (and the sun, there is a UV coating). It’s great, it might look a little silly but it works! It keeps me dry on our walks and I can forage in my bag without having to put the brolly down, yay!

On the walk home, I clipped it down lower on the buggy and it was the perfect height for LP, she was convinced that she was holding it as she walked so it kept her happy and a little drier (this was before we reached the puddles, there was no staying under the brolly then!). And LP loves the logo, she calls it the “mama baba umbra”.

And it is perfect so when LP wants to be out of the buggy & up in the ringsling. Because it is very difficult to push the buggy & hold a brolly at the same time when LP’s up in the ringsling as she tries to help with both! So, hurrah for gadgets!

Now, off to google Veg Box schemes before LP wakes up! Ooops she’s just woken up, I should have googled before blogging about googling :)

@ twoveganboys, I think you win the title of “fastest comment ever” here, I snuck back into the post to add a paragraph and there you were!

Isn’t it great how much children love all the fresh fuit and veg, it must be all the colours and smells, very interactive!

I think even if we go for a veg box, we’ll still go to the market, just not on days like this ;)

    That buggy brolly is genius!!
I always find walking in the rain (and sploshing in puddles) makes me feel so liberated and I’m sure it’s due to my childhood when my mum and I used to walk everywhere, come rain or shine.
And it’s even nice to get home and dry off AND have a cuppa tea!

You are the cool gadget queen! We haven’t been to the farmer’s market this year :-( I couldn’t figure out how to manage DS, the mobs of fellow shoppers and my loot. Now that the season is almost over and I have lots of travel with DS under my belt, I think I might try to go this weekend. Sorry I haven’t commented on all your awesome cookbook reviews…had something like 400 unread blog posts in my Reader! Still catching up :-) . Overcast (but, of course, not raining) here today. Came home to autumn temperatures, though. 40% chance of snow Saturday night! One extreme or the other around here. Hugs to you and LP!
