Granny Trolley – not just for grannies!

12 November, 2008 by halfpintpixie

NaBloPoMo 2008 – Day 12

Here’s another gizmo that we use quite a lot, it’s our funky pink shopping trolley, or as we call them in Ireland, our granny trolley. Nobody uses them in Galway, even grannies, so we look slightly nutty trundling it around behind us, but it is fantastic!

Mr. HPP is from Dublin and where he grew up nobody drove a car so everyone had trolleys. There was even a trolley parking spot in the supermarket where you would park your trolley while you shopped. So he sees nothing wrong with them, I on the other hand took some convincing. We had a paisley one when we lived in Dublin which was such a granny-trolley, but now we have this one!

One of the girls from Babywearing Ireland forum found them on a UK site, and a bunch of the girls clubbed together to reduce the shipping charges. But this was all while we were in London at Easter so I missed the boat there. But, no I didn’t! There was one unclaimed trolley in their batch so I quickly claimed it, collected it in Dublin and happy times for all!

I just pop LP in the sling, grab the trolley and off we go to do our groceries, happy days :)

Apparently they are very popular among Continental European babywearers. I might yet start a fashion for them in Galway! LP calls it “her” trolley, and she thinks it is fantastic. And it is.

And before I get in trouble, the trolley only has canvas bags in it in that photo! I’m not making LP pull all our groceries home… yet ;-)

Oooh, these are lots of fun. My Oma had one when I was growing up, and we always used it to go shopping. Sometimes my little brother would sit on it (if it was empty) and I would pull him along, lazy boy…

Granny trollies are very fashionable where I come from. The older looking and the more paisley-esque they are the better! It’s probably because my home city has an excellent market with loads of individual stalls, so granny trollies are essential for collecting all your goodies and avoiding plastic bags.
