NaBloPoMo 2008 – Day 13
During the recent Bloggy Giveaway I noticed many etsy shops selling little roll-up pouches for crayons. Very cute and very functional! And (possibly) not that hard to make with bits from one’s fabric stash, if one had a fabric stash that is!
So, in line with my new crafty self, I did what HPPs do best and wandered around online to find delicious fabrics. I found plenty on eBay, bought a few and now I have a fabric stash, hurrah!
The most popular online crayon roll-up pouch tutorial seems to be this one from Nested, so I decided to try it out.
My mum kindly loaned me her sewing machine, but I can’t figure it out (yes, I really am that dumb) so I got impatient and hand-sewed it. A fair bit of work, but it was a fine day, so while LP played on the swingset, I got sewing. Well I’m sure in the olden days people hand-sewed their crayon pouches too
Well… What do you think? We love it!

It’s made with Mermaid material as LP is currently obsessed with mermaids! And the pouch-bit is made of felt, which holds the crayons in place nicely (even when the pouch is used as a football) and would hold shorter broken ones in place too, which is handy.
So, I guess you folk with upcoming toddler birthdays can guess what present they’re getting from me, eh? Although, rest assured that I will get the sewing machine working first so you don’t have to endure my interpretive stitching!
I’m also thinking of replacing some of the crayon slots with a little notepad, it currently holds 12 crayons, so 8 crayons and a notepad would be cool too for an all-in-one colouring solution straight from your purse/handbag/manbag!
Next task: An airplane activity pack for Littlepixie for our trip at Easter, something like this cute one.

lovely, may be you can launch your etsy shop very soon
I really envy of crafty women.I’m sooo useless,I cannot even hand-sew!!
HPP!! That is adorable!!! I cannot hand sew to save my life… and my machine sewing skills are not that much better.
My mother is an excellent seamstress and has made many, many wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses (and a lot of my clothes when I was a little girl) and two of my sisters made their own wedding gowns. The sewing/crafty gene completely missed me!
There is nothing wrong with *interpretive stitching*
and those crayon pouches are very cool. I only dicovered Etsy yesterday, but I already fell in love, and Traveler’s nieces and nephews will be seeing some handmade things this year…
@ Isil, I can’t really hand sew,, I just keep sticking the needle in and out and the thread stays there, success! Do you know there are actually real names for different types of stitches, madness!
@ Lisa, My mum too! And both my grannies. I lived in handmade clothes as a child, all my dolls had handmade clothes and mum made my wedding dress and a full length crocheted coat to go over it. I have in the past knitted, crocheted and macrame-d, alas though, I seem to have stopped developing my crafting gene early, I often think I have excellent crafting skills, for a five year old!
@ Schatz, etsy is very addictive, lock up your credit card/paypal password now!!! quickly
Well done HPP!
I don’t know how you can stand hand sewing, if my machine isn’t working nothing gets sewn
Oh my!! How excellent! And hand-stitched…incredible. You are so amazing. I was just tidying up DS’s art supplies and was cursing the box of crayons for the mess that it is. Having a home for each individual crayon is brilliant! Love the mermaids, too
It is gorgeous HPP. Well done.
I have been meaning to make a similar one for Lily for a while now… but for pencils (sadly she still eats crayons).
It’s so beautiful! What a lucky Little Pixie, you always make her the most fabulous things!
That is AWESOME!!!
And guess what?
You CAN sew, there’s your evidence.
I just don’t have the patience for sewing (plus I don’t really like it) – I like cross stitch. I would LOVE a sewing machine for the simple reason I’d get to see my results quickly. I’m on the lookout for a cheap second hand one so fingers crossed.
[...] me 1.5 hours! And so fast to make the handle tubes, ah bliss! I think I shall make up a few more crayon rolls next to practice my straight lines, they are pretty cool gifts, so I’m sure I will find [...]
