Splendid Woody Thingies

9 January, 2009 by halfpintpixie

Look what arrived in the post today… lots of goodies from Casey’s Wood Supplies. I would like to officially blame Lyneya for this shopping “trip” as earlier this week I read a post of hers about wooden toys and followed a link to an acorn-laden post by Soulemama and this acorn-y goodness on Knitting Iris and I read all the comments on the posts and then did a few searches on MDC, and then got over-excited (as I do) and then assembled a massive order on Casey’s, cut it in half and then added a few  more bits, then removed some, then added more, paid for it all and 3 days later (3 days !) the package was here. Madness :)

Here is our goodie pile…

woodengoodies

The acorns arrived in perfect time, today is “A=Acorn” so Littlepixie was well impressed at them. They feel gorgeous. We’ve mixed them in with our real pine cones on her arts & crafts table. Actually, I tell a lie, they are currently arranged in the little bowls and plates for all her fairy people to eat.

The little sleighs are toting some fairy folk as I type and the two thimbles are for me! All the wood cutout animals have been secreted away and will make appearances throughout the coming weeks, I am keeping them for bus journeys, buggy trips etc. Bribery Waldorf-style ;-) Much like Noah, I got two of each animal, so they won’t be lonely.

And of course, I realised that one of the items I had removed from my cart and forgotten to replace was a pile of little wooden people like the type JumbleberryMama made our gnomes out of. So I simply had to put through another order just for them! I still have heaps of felt left over, and the little peg folk are the same size as LP’s fairy people so I forsee much making of little wooden people in my future! LP’s little fairy folk are plastic, but they are good quality and very cute! They are about 2.5 inches tall so our Jumbleberry gnomes play well with them, I think LP will happily welcome the wooden folk to the family!

Actually, I am currently assembling a folder of bookmarked inspirations for the little wooden folk so stay tuned next week for lots of links :) I kinda miss making the felt food, it was very satisfying to sew every evening, so I think that will be my next project. To whet your appetites, here are a few links I found through an MDC thread… a gnome tutorial, a pirate and an astronaut. Cool eh? Now wasn’t someone I know going to show us a “King Winter” tutorial a while ago? Ahem?

On an aside, it is a bit poo-ey that I can’t seem to find any crafty stuff I need in Ireland at all. Do we not craft here? If anyone can recommend a good online crafty Irish store that would be great!

In the meantime, I will reassure myself that ordering boxes from the US through regular post has far less of an environmental impact than me getting the bus into town, the bus to Shannon, a plane to the US and a taxi to the shop, buying my wood cuts, then taxi to the airport, plane to Shannon, bus to Galway and bus home, yup? :)

You’re killing me here! What a haul. I LOVE the acorns!! Especially the ones on Knitting Iris. The pirate and astronaut are too much!

Yes, the tutorial is coming…I just got a calling ;-)

I’m totally jumping on your crafty wagon. Julieta loves looking up at the moon so I figure a moon thing is in order. Thanks for all the cool ideas and inspiration. It’s taking my mind off of the horrible night I had last night. ;)

Oh goodness. I *heart* those felted acorns. Must make some! Isn’t Casey’s awesome? Only 3 days to Ireland? That’s impressive. I get my orders in one day, but I always just thought it was because I lived in the same state. I can’t wait to see what kind of little gnomes that you make. I really need to make some of those pirate ones. Maybe I could come up with some knight ones. That would be cool.

You’re hooked! And you’ll soon discover that there’s no such thing as too many acorns or peg-people. :)

I’ll trade you US craft stores for living in Ireland! I only spent a couple weeks total there, but loved every minute. :) Right now it’s well below freezing and covered with snow. Next week is supposed to be -16 or so Farenheit.

Ireland’s looking better all the time!

Maybe I’ll get my father-in-law to start turning the wood now so that I can make them in April…

    (He’s tricky with wood)

So many awesome wood things. I LOVE wood, I mean really love wood. I sit and stroke wooden things quite regularly. I’ve said too much….those gnomes are the cutest.

I love the horsie the most! You’re such a cool mom, you are always doing something extremely fun with/for LP!

Do I recall you blogging about Powdered Milk Formula??
Can you point me in the right direction if it was you (I am known to get confuzzled from time to time)

  10. on 11 January, 2009 at 20:41 Jeni Treehugger

It was about all the nasties they put into powdered baby milk formula…..

  11. on 11 January, 2009 at 23:05 halfpintpixie

@ Jeni, nope don’t think that was me, I usually just complain about formula marketing! I don’t know much about what they put in formula, I think that would be scary information indeed! Maybe take a look at Baby Milk Action’s blog, they have info on the melamine scare in China… http://boycottnestle.blogspot.com/2008/10/nestle-melamine-asia.html
